Divisional Controller
TriMark USA | Remote
Position Summary:
TriMark USA is seeking a hands-on, results-oriented Divisional Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations and financial processes for an assigned business division. This role is ideal for an accounting leader who enjoys being close to the details, identifying process gaps, improving internal controls, and driving meaningful operational change.
The Divisional Controller will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting while actively managing core accounting activities, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, reconciliations, and the monthly close process, as applicable to the division.
Beyond traditional controllership responsibilities, this individual will take an active role in improving accounting workflows, standardizing processes, resolving recurring issues, and implementing practical solutions that increase efficiency, accountability, and financial visibility.
The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver who can balance daily execution with continuous improvement and effectively influence change across Accounting, Finance, and Operations.
This is a remote position requiring strong communication skills, self-direction, and the ability to collaborate effectively with geographically dispersed teams.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
- Oversee and actively participate in daily accounting activities to ensure accurate, complete, and timely financial information.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring deadlines are consistently met and financial results are properly supported.
- Review general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and balance sheet accounts to maintain financial accuracy.
- Monitor and resolve accounting discrepancies, aged reconciling items, and transaction-processing issues.
- Oversee applicable accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, cash application, collections, and related accounting activities.
- Ensure revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, and other transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with company policies and applicable accounting standards.
- Prepare and review financial statements, operating reports, account analyses, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain appropriate internal controls, documentation, and audit readiness.
- Partner with divisional leadership to explain financial results, investigate variances, and address issues affecting financial performance.
Process Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Evaluate existing accounting processes to identify inefficiencies, control gaps, unnecessary manual work, and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead hands-on efforts to streamline workflows, simplify procedures, and reduce recurring errors and rework.
- Standardize accounting practices, documentation, and reporting across teams and locations where appropriate.
- Develop and implement practical solutions that improve transaction accuracy, processing speed, and overall accounting efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to automate routine tasks, improve system utilization, and strengthen data integrity.
- Establish clear procedures, process ownership, and accountability for recurring accounting activities.
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators to measure process effectiveness and identify opportunities for further improvement.
- Follow through on improvement initiatives to ensure changes are implemented, adopted, and delivering measurable results.
Change Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership
- Drive change by identifying problems, recommending solutions, and taking ownership of implementation through completion.
- Partner with Operations, Sales, Shared Services, and other Finance stakeholders to resolve process breakdowns and improve the flow of financial information.
- Build strong working relationships with operational leaders to address root causes rather than simply correcting accounting errors after the fact.
- Communicate process changes clearly and help stakeholders understand new procedures, expectations, and responsibilities.
- Challenge existing practices constructively and encourage a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
- Support the implementation of new systems, accounting tools, reporting processes, and organizational initiatives.
- Manage competing priorities while maintaining focus on critical deadlines, accurate reporting, and sustainable process improvements.
Financial Controls, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Identify control weaknesses and implement corrective actions to reduce financial and operational risk.
- Coordinate internal and external audit requests and ensure supporting documentation is complete and readily available.
- Monitor balance sheet integrity, transaction accuracy, and adherence to established accounting procedures.
- Ensure accounting issues are escalated promptly, with clear recommendations and follow-through on resolution.
Team Leadership & Development
- Provide direction, coaching, and support to accounting personnel within the division.
- Establish clear performance expectations, reinforce accountability, and promote consistent execution.
- Identify training needs and improve team capability through standardized procedures and knowledge sharing.
- Encourage team members to identify inefficiencies, recommend solutions, and take ownership of process improvements.
- Collaborate with corporate Finance and Accounting leadership to align divisional practices with company-wide objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- CPA or CMA preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar role.
- Strong working knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and the monthly close process.
- Demonstrated experience managing hands-on accounting operations and resolving complex transactional or accounting issues.
- Proven ability to identify process inefficiencies, implement improvements, and drive change in an established organization.
- Experience strengthening internal controls, standardizing workflows, and improving accounting accuracy and efficiency.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues and determine root causes.
- Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools; proficiency with Excel required.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate across functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and maintain accountability in a remote environment.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check post offer acceptance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, equipment, service, rental, or other operationally complex businesses.
- Experience supporting multiple locations, business units, or decentralized operations.
- Familiarity with inventory accounting, operational billing, work orders, fixed assets, service revenue, or rental accounting, depending on divisional scope.
- Experience with ERP platforms such as JD Edwards or comparable enterprise accounting systems.
