About this role

About the Company

Brilliant creates interactive, adaptive, and engaging learning experiences designed to help people become better problem solvers. The company serves hundreds of thousands of paid subscribers and operates profitably. Its culture emphasizes curiosity, technical excellence, generosity, direct communication, and a commitment to helping learners succeed.

About the Role

Brilliant is seeking an experienced Android Engineer to take significant ownership of its Android product. As one of only two Android engineers on the team, you will help shape the mobile learning experience for users worldwide, working closely with Product, Design, and Data to develop engaging features using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

This role offers substantial technical autonomy and the opportunity to influence product direction, engineering practices, and the learner experience. You may also contribute to iOS and web development when needed. The team values thoughtful engineering, practical problem-solving, collaboration, and delivering meaningful user outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, develop, and ship Android features from initial concepts through implementation and release.
  • Use Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to create interactive, engaging, and reliable mobile learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and Data teams to identify opportunities and deliver features that improve user outcomes.
  • Contribute code across Android, iOS, and potentially web platforms as needed.
  • Make technical decisions that balance code quality, maintainability, development speed, and business value.
  • Take ownership of engineering decisions and the quality of delivered features.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the development process and the experience of both engineers and learners.
  • Write clear, maintainable code that supports long-term product development.
  • Consider learner needs and product impact throughout the development process.
  • Share knowledge, participate in collaborative problem-solving, and contribute to a culture of mentorship and accountability.
  • Explore AI tools and productivity improvements that support effective software development.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
  • A proven track record of delivering software features from concept through release.
  • Ability to think strategically about both technical decisions and business objectives.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • A product-oriented mindset with a focus on user needs and outcomes.
  • Ability to write clear, readable, and maintainable code.
  • Curiosity about AI tools and their potential to improve engineering productivity.
  • Willingness to mentor other engineers and learn from teammates.
  • Comfort working autonomously while remaining accountable to the wider team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing interactive learning products.
  • Experience building consumer-facing mobile applications.
  • Experience working at high-growth startups or in small engineering teams.
  • Engineering Culture The engineering team includes former founders and senior engineers from leading technology companies.
  • The team emphasizes ownership, speed, quality, and measurable user impact rather than output volume alone.
  • Engineers are encouraged to collaborate, make thoughtful decisions, use AI-enabled development tools, and maintain high standards of trust and accountability.
  • Work Arrangement and Location This is a full-time remote position for candidates based in the United States.
  • The company also lists New York City and San Francisco as location options.
  • Core working hours are 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM Pacific Time to support collaboration across time zones.
  • Compensation may be adjusted by approximately 5–10% for employees outside San Francisco and New York City.
  • Visa sponsorship or work authorization support is listed for H-1B, O-1, and OPT candidates.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual base salary of $180,000–$240,000, depending on role level.
  • A structured compensation framework based on role and impact, rather than individual salary negotiation.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance fully paid by the employer.
  • Dependent healthcare coverage of $1,900 per month.
  • Flexible paid time off, approximately six weeks annually including holidays.
  • Parental leave.
  • Home-office equipment stipend.

  • Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate enjoys solving real user problems, values pair programming and collaboration, and is excited about interactive education.
  • They approach technical challenges with curiosity, favor practical solutions over unnecessary complexity, and are interested in using AI tools to improve productivity.
  • They are comfortable both giving and receiving feedback and are motivated by continuous learning.
