About The Role

This position serves as a key compliance and general ledger accounting professional for an established, multi-location distributor headquartered in Northwest Portland, Oregon. Reporting to finance leadership, the Tax and Regulatory Compliance Accountant manages day-to-day multi-jurisdictional tax filings, specialized state regulatory compliance, and regulatory fee reporting across West Coast operations.

This role balances complex state and local compliance filings with core month-end close responsibilities, general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, and ERP system maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance & Filing: Manage full-cycle processing, preparation, review, and electronic filing for multi-state returns, including sales and use tax, excise taxes, Washington Business & Occupation (B&O) tax, and regulatory agency fees.
  • Regulatory Reporting & Audit Support: Prepare specialized state environmental and regulatory compliance reports; communicate directly with federal, state, and local taxing authorities; and resolve jurisdictional tax notices and audit inquiries.
  • General Ledger & Month-End Close: Prepare month-end accruals, deferrals, and journal entries; complete monthly tax account reconciliations to ensure financial statement accuracy.
  • ERP System Administration: Maintain and configure tax rate setups, schedules, and automated compliance tables within the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
  • Process Improvement: Evaluate tax accounting workflows, recommend automation enhancements, and implement process improvements to increase operational efficiency.
  • Cross-Functional Support: Provide tax and regulatory compliance guidance to regional operating units across the West Coast, legal teams, and internal customer service departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
  • 3+ years of relevant accounting and multi-state tax compliance experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and tax reconciliations.
  • Effective communication skills with a team-oriented, customer-service mindset.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a self-directed setting.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience managing multi-jurisdictional excise taxes or specialized state environmental regulatory reporting.
  • Direct hands-on experience utilizing enterprise accounting and ERP platforms.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Department: Finance & Accounting
  • Work Location: NW Portland, Oregon
  • Professional Environment: Stable, collaborative team offering high autonomy and regional cross-functional visibility
