About the role
This is our first in-house tax hire, and you'll join to own the tax function end to end. Income tax, GST, FBT and transfer pricing are already in motion across our entities, supported by a strong finance team and external advisors. What's missing is a single owner who can pull it all together, lift the standard, and build a function fit for a company that's scaling into new markets fast.
You'll sit within the Group Reporting team and own tax governance, compliance and strategy across every jurisdiction we operate in, and every one we're about to. The finance team runs much of the day-to-day mechanics, so this isn't a role built around preparing returns. You set the direction, own the risk, review what goes out the door and make sure the whole system holds together as we scale.
That said, we're a lean team, and there will be times you need to get your hands dirty to get something done right.
You'll be the go-to for tax across the business, partnering with finance, legal, people and commercial teams, briefing senior leaders and management, and coordinating a global network of advisors. You won't need to be the expert in every market. You'll need to be the person who knows what questions to ask, who to ask them of, and how to land a clear answer with the business.
If you're a tax generalist who likes owning the whole picture, gets a kick out of building things properly, and can hold your own in a room of senior leaders, you'll feel at home here.
What your day could look like
- Own the group's tax compliance calendar across all jurisdictions, along with the income tax provision and tax notes for group reporting, making sure everything is accurate, on time and backed by positions you'd stand behind.
- Build and run Halter's tax governance framework: risk management, controls, policies and documentation that hold up as we grow.
- Own the group's transfer pricing policy and documentation, partnering with Legal on the intercompany arrangements that sit behind it.
- Lead the tax workstream for new market entry, from structuring and registrations through to permanent establishment, indirect tax and customs considerations for getting hardware and people into new countries.
- Manage our external advisors worldwide and be the point of contact for tax authorities across our markets.
- Advise the business on the tax side of employee equity, cross-border employees and remuneration, and make sure we're capturing incentives like R&D tax credits.
- Brief senior leaders and management on tax risk, exposure and strategy in plain language.
- Improve how tax gets done through better processes, systems and data, so the function scales without headcount scaling with it.
- We're a fast-moving growth company, so from time to time other responsibilities will pop up, and you'll be part of making it all happen!
What we are looking for
- Significant tax experience as a trusted senior advisor in a professional services or in-house environment, with a Chartered Accountant or equivalent tax qualification.
- A tax generalist at heart, comfortable across corporate income tax, indirect tax, employment taxes and transfer pricing, who knows when to go deep and when to bring in a specialist.
- Experience with international groups or global tax exposure, including the mechanics of operating across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong project management skills, with a track record of running multiple workstreams, advisors and deadlines at once.
- Confidence engaging with senior leaders and translating technical tax positions into clear commercial recommendations.
- Experience building or materially uplifting tax governance, controls and risk frameworks.
You'll crush this gig if you
- Take real ownership. When something sits with you, it gets done properly, and people don't need to check.
- Enjoy building. There's a solid foundation here, and you want to shape what the tax function looks like from here.
- Work well with people outside finance. You can explain a tax position to someone in commercial or product and have them walk away clear on what it means for them.
- Like a bit of ambiguity. New markets, new entities and new questions come up regularly, and you'd rather work through them than wait for a playbook.
Bonus points if
- You've worked with a US GAAP reporting group or have hands-on experience with income tax provisioning under ASC 740.
- You've been through a rapid international expansion and set up tax in new markets from scratch.
- You've dealt with tax on employee share schemes across borders.
- You've worked with hardware or products that physically cross borders, and understand the customs and indirect tax that comes with them.
Our Benefits
- Delicious snacks and drinks are available for your daily flow.
- Healthy body, healthy mind. We're partnered with Southern Cross Health Insurance to support your well-being.
- We offer 6 months of fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers, 4 weeks of fully paid secondary caregiver leave and many other parental benefits that support you and your family.
- Our personal growth is important. Halter offers an annual $1000 self-development budget to be used for anything that fuels personal growth.
- Our time to recharge is valued, we're offered wellness leave and unlimited paid annual leave.
- Importantly, we offer an inclusive and attractive remuneration package made up of salary, benefits and an employee stock ownership plan.
Our Office First Approach
