About this role

ZimZee Recruiting is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Firmware), located in Tucson, AZ. This position offers the opportunity to develop and own embedded firmware for high-precision flow and pressure instrumentation used in aerospace, bioprocessing, energy, environmental science, and advanced research.

The ideal candidate brings strong embedded C development experience, real-time systems expertise, and a proven ability to take firmware from initial hardware bring-up through production release. Skills and Requirements A bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is valued.

6+ years of professional embedded software development experience using C on microcontrollers, including firmware deployed in production products. Strong understanding of real-time embedded systems, including interrupt-driven architectures, memory management, deterministic timing, and RTOS-based or bare-metal development.

Demonstrated experience owning firmware modules throughout the development lifecycle, from design and implementation through testing and production release. Hands-on hardware bring-up and debugging experience using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and embedded development toolchains. Proficiency with Git, automated testing, static analysis, and embedded software development best practices.

Experience with ARM Cortex microcontrollers, FreeRTOS, and embedded control architectures is valuable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded C firmware for precision flow and pressure instrumentation, including closed-loop control algorithms, digital filtering, calibration routines, device drivers, and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Develop and support communication interfaces, industrial protocols, bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, device configuration, diagnostics, and logging capabilities.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering teams on hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and debugging at the register, signal, and system levels.
  • Improve firmware quality and reliability through unit testing, integration testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, continuous integration, and automated validation.
  • Contribute to embedded system architecture, technical design reviews, coding standards, software release processes, and ongoing improvements to established firmware platforms.
  • Partner with product management, applications engineering, and other technical teams to translate customer requirements into practical firmware solutions while supporting manufacturing testing and field diagnostics.
  • Take ownership of critical firmware subsystems and support new product development from initial prototype through production deployment and ongoing maintenance.
