About this role

Job Requirements

As the Lead Software Engineer on the Marvel Comics Technology team within Studio Technology, you will own both backend and frontend development, architecting and delivering scalable, high-performance applications and seamless user interfaces that power Marvel Comics' publishing business and next-generation AI products.

In this role, you will build scalable solutions that support Marvel Comics' Publishing Apps and Workflows, as well as innovative new products. You will help power the editorial, production, and operational systems that drive the day-to-day business of publishing comics while contributing to the future of Marvel's publishing ecosystem.

You will collaborate closely with management, product partners, engineering teams, and design to deliver innovative, reliable, and easy-to-use experiences for Marvel's editorial, production, and business users. Your work will sit at the intersection of operational publishing systems, emerging products, and new applications that support the modernization of workflows and the overall technology stack.

You will participate in code reviews, promote best practices, and uphold high standards in architecture, performance, accessibility, and code quality, helping ensure maintainable solutions across the team.

This position requires expertise in modern full-stack engineering (Java Spring Boot, Node.js, and modern JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js), along with a passion for building high-quality, scalable digital products and applying AI tools to accelerate delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance full-stack applications that support Marvel Comics' Publishing Apps and Workflows, internal tooling, and new AI products.
  • Build robust backend services and APIs (Java Spring Boot, Node.js) alongside modern, component-based user interfaces (React, Angular, or Vue.js).
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, and Disney partner teams to define and deliver end-to-end solutions across publishing, title and asset management, and AI workflows.
  • Integrate with existing Oracle publishing systems and the emerging unified data layer being built with the Studio Tech Data Platforms team.
  • Contribute to building and integrating AI-driven product capabilities, including APIs, application surfaces, and orchestration layers.
  • Drive code quality through reviews, mentorship, and modern engineering practices.
  • Ensure alignment with architecture, security, accessibility, and development standards.
  • Optimize system performance, scalability, reliability, and stability.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and QA partners to support CI/CD, testing, observability, and monitoring.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tooling to accelerate delivery and improve code quality.
  • Help evolve engineering practices through adoption of new technologies, frameworks, and tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of full-stack development experience.
  • Expertise with Java Spring Boot.
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js).
  • Node.js experience highly valued.
  • Proven experience building scalable backend and frontend solutions.
  • Experience working within agile product teams.
  • REST API development and integration experience.
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and Spring ecosystem best practices.
  • Experience with backend performance optimization and database access patterns.
  • Experience with distributed systems and messaging technologies.
  • Familiarity with relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leveraging AI tools for development, debugging, and code quality.
  • Experience building products or tooling on top of AI/ML services, including LLMs, vector databases, retrieval pipelines, and orchestration frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of modern frontend architecture and state management.
  • Experience designing and implementing data integrations and pipelines.
  • Familiarity with content metadata systems, localization workflows, or digital asset management.
  • Experience supporting publishing, media, entertainment, editorial, or production workflows.
