Job Description
The Senior AI & Data Science Consultant contributes to the strategic vision of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and serves as a senior technical contributor in the design, implementation, and evaluation of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence initiatives.
The consultant creates organizational value by integrating and analyzing data from clinical, research, educational, financial, and operational areas of the medical center.
This enterprise-wide role applies statistical analysis, mathematical and simulation modeling, operations research, machine learning, agentic and generative AI to complex healthcare and business challenges. The consultant translates ambiguous questions into well-defined analytical or AI solutions and communicates findings, evidence, limitations, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Under the direction of the supervisor, the consultant works with substantial independence across the solution lifecycle, from problem framing, data preparation, model development, and evaluation through secure integration, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
The role partners with clinical and administrative leaders, data engineering, platform, application development, architecture, cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, and governance teams to move high-value solutions from concept to sustainable enterprise use.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Informatics, or a related quantitative field. Six years of experience in data science, advanced analytics, machine learning, AI engineering, software engineering, or a related field, with demonstrated success delivering AI/ML solutions.
Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, strong statistical and modeling expertise, hands-on machine learning experience, and knowledge of software engineering, cloud platforms, MLOps/LLMOps, and generative AI. Ability to apply responsible AI practices, communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, evaluate technical solutions, and translate business needs into analytical and implementation plans.
Desired Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include experience applying analytics or AI in healthcare, academic medical centers, clinical research, or other regulated environments; familiarity with Epic data, healthcare workflows, claims data, and interoperability standards such as HL7 FHIR; experience with Azure AI and data platforms, RAG and agentic AI solutions, infrastructure-as-code, containerization, API management, and enterprise observability; proficiency with visualization and analytical tools such as Tableau, Plotly, or Streamlit; demonstrated leadership of cross-functional projects and mentoring of technical teams; expertise in advanced quantitative methods such as optimization, simulation, Bayesian analysis, causal inference, or forecasting; and experience utilizing and integrating knowledge graphs.
