About this role
Data Analytics Engineer
Hours: 20 hours/week (1099 contractor)
Location: Fully remote — United States. (Optional hybrid work in Phoenix office)
Compensation: $40–55/hour
About Us
We are a mission-driven EdTech consulting firm specializing in K–12 software solutions—delivering full-stack development, UX/UI, go-to-market strategy, and data analytics tailored to education systems like SIS and LMS platforms. We collaborate closely with EdTech startups, schools, districts, and other education-adjacent organizations to help them adopt scalable, user-centered, and integrated technology.
School Harbor's HQ is located in Phoenix, Arizona, but teammates on the Data Team live in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Maryland.
Role Overview
As a Data Analytics Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in transforming raw educational data into actionable insights. You'll empower internal teams and K–12 clients by organizing, analyzing, and visualizing complex datasets—helping them streamline decision-making, monitor performance, and drive strategic, data-backed outcomes.
This is a hands-on role combining data engineering, analytics, and process automation. You'll work across multiple client projects, often independently, to build reliable integrations, develop practical solutions, and communicate insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Example tasks:
- Build a dashboard visualizing student enrollment data for a district in Tableau, Power BI, or Plotly.
- Automate end-of-year school reporting (charts, tables, data transfers, etc.) in Python.
- Connect a school lunch database to a separate student information system using a cloud-hosted function.
- Build automated email marketing workflows that segment contacts, trigger communications, and track engagement.
- Integrate Google Ads or Meta Ads performance data into reporting dashboards to help clients understand campaign effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Data Management & Architecture
- Consolidate, clean, and maintain data from LMS, SIS, assessments, and other sources.
- Design reliable ETL processes to support consistent data flows across multiple systems.
- Leverage relational databases, SQL, and appropriate NoSQL technologies to organize, investigate, and prepare data for analysis.
- Identify and resolve data quality issues, inconsistencies, and integration challenges across large, real-world datasets.
Process Automation
- Build and maintain cloud-hosted automation workflows to streamline reporting, data transfers, and integrations.
- Develop Python scripts and applications to automate recurring data pulls, transformations, and reporting workflows.
- Develop AI-driven tools to optimize and scale complex or repetitive processes.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and improve existing integrations and automation systems.
Analysis & Insight Development
- Explore trends and patterns in student engagement, assessment results, and system usage.
- Develop and deliver KPI dashboards and performance reports for educators and administrators.
- Produce recurring reports that help clients monitor program outcomes, operational performance, and engagement.
Visualization & Reporting
- Build intuitive dashboards and visualizations using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Plotly Dash.
- Present findings in compelling, interactive formats tailored for non-technical stakeholders.
- Design clear, executive-friendly reporting experiences that make complex data accessible and actionable.
Marketing Automation & Analytics
- Support the implementation and maintenance of automated email marketing workflows, including audience segmentation, triggered communications, and engagement tracking.
- Help integrate marketing platforms and contact databases to maintain accurate audiences and reliable data flows.
- Support reporting and analytics for digital advertising campaigns across platforms such as Google Ads and Meta Ads, including campaign performance, conversions, and return on ad spend.
- Automate the collection and consolidation of marketing performance data to support dashboards, campaign optimization, and business decision-making.
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with engineers, UX designers, product managers, marketing teams, and clients to understand analytical needs and inform product direction.
- Work directly with clients to clarify requirements, respond to data requests, and communicate project progress and technical tradeoffs.
- Translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Independently investigate ambiguous problems, identify root causes, and propose practical solutions.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure data integrity and governance across all analytics processes through thorough QA.
- Validate datasets, integrations, and reporting outputs for accuracy and consistency.
- Adhere to ethical standards, security practices, and regulatory requirements relevant to K–12 education data.
Qualifications
We're seeking a candidate who can work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, problem-solving skills, curiosity, and the drive to build productive relationships with teammates, clients, and other stakeholders.
Required
- 2+ years of experience working in data analysis, data engineering, or process automation within any industry, or equivalent demonstrated proficiency in a nontraditional role.
- Strong proficiency in Python, particularly for data cleaning, transformation, automation, and analysis. Comfortable working with messy, real-world datasets and building reliable workflows.
- Strong working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including investigating data issues, preparing datasets, and supporting reporting workflows.
- Proficiency with Excel and/or Google Sheets for data analysis and manipulation.
- Experience building and deploying cloud-hosted applications, integrations, or automation workflows.
- Experience building dashboards and data visualizations, with an ability to communicate insights clearly and effectively.
- Experience managing large datasets and integrating information from multiple systems, including identifying and resolving data quality issues.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience interacting with clients or end users in a professional setting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with the initiative to independently investigate ambiguous technical challenges and develop practical solutions.
- Baseline coding proficiency: AI-supported workflows are encouraged, but candidates must be able to read, write, debug, and organize practical code without relying on AI assistance.
- Must be permanently authorized to work in the United States as a 1099 contractor.
Preferred
- 4+ years of experience in data analysis, data engineering, or process automation.
- Experience developing interactive dashboards in Power BI and/or Plotly Dash.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure Functions, Azure Web Apps, databases, Key Vault, storage accounts, or related cloud services.
- Experience working with at least one major cloud provider, such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Experience working with education data and school systems (SIS/LMS), such as PowerSchool, Clever, i-Ready, or similar platforms.
- JavaScript and/or TypeScript proficiency, including experience contributing to custom dashboards, web applications, or front-end data products.
- Experience developing or maintaining email marketing automations and integrating marketing tools with CRMs or other data systems.
- Familiarity with Google Ads, Meta Ads, and digital advertising performance metrics, particularly from a reporting, integration, or analytics perspective.
- Experience with predictive analytics, statistical modeling, forecasting, or machine learning.
- Experience collaborating with end users and stakeholders to define requirements, communicate project progress, and translate business needs into technical solutions.
