Position Summary

As a Senior Software Engineer at Optum Technology, you will be part of a high-performing engineering team dedicated to building, modernizing, and scaling mission-critical enterprise applications that transform healthcare delivery. In this role, you will lead end-to-end SDLC activities across Java/Spring Boot microservices, cloud architectures, and batch-processing platforms.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, implement technical solutions, and leverage modern engineering practices-including enterprise-approved AI tools-to accelerate code delivery, enhance code quality, and optimize application performance.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise applications, REST APIs, microservices, and batch-processing applications using Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, and Spring Batch across all phases of the SDLC
  • Analyze complex business requirements and translate them into scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions
  • Participate in architectural discussions, perform system design reviews, and proactively identify architectural risks, dependencies, and performance optimizations
  • Lead code reviews, enforce engineering best practices and security standards, and mentor junior engineers to resolve technical challenges and project blockers
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across Business, QA, DevOps, and Architecture to deliver high-quality solutions and drive application modernization initiatives
  • Provide production support, incident triage, and root cause analysis for business-critical applications, participating in on-call rotation as needed
  • Drive continuous engineering excellence by contributing to CI/CD pipeline enhancements, automation initiatives, and operational stability efforts
  • Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate repetitive tasks, generate unit test cases, assist with code reviews, and drive continuous improvement

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear directions on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of equivalent software development experience in lieu of a degree
  • 10+ years of hands-on software development experience in enterprise application development using Java/J2EE, object-oriented design, and design patterns
  • 8+ years of experience designing and developing applications using Spring Boot and Spring Batch
  • 5+ years of experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices architecture
  • 5+ years of experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle) and writing SQL queries
  • 4+ years of experience supporting production applications, including incident triage, troubleshooting, and on-call support in an Agile/Scrum environment
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud-native application development and containerization technologies (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Hands-on cloud experience with AWS
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation using GitHub Actions
  • In-depth understanding of application security practices, performance tuning, monitoring, and observability
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) for code generation, test creation, code reviews, and workflow automation
  • All Telecommuters will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter Policy.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).

No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
