About this role

Assistant Controller – Construction Accounting

Benchmark General Contractors | Fort Myers, FL Full-Time | On-Site

Help strengthen the financial operations behind the work.

Benchmark General Contractors is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to work directly with our Controller and help lead the day-to-day accounting operations of our growing construction business.

We need a strong construction accounting professional who can take ownership, produce accurate financial information, improve processes, and follow through without constant supervision. You should be equally comfortable reviewing job costs, resolving a reconciliation issue, supporting the accounting team, and talking with a project manager about a billing discrepancy.

This is a hands-on position with meaningful responsibility and room to grow as the company expands.

What You’ll Do

Support the Controller and lead daily accounting execution

  • Serve as the Controller’s primary backup and help keep accounting operations running smoothly.
  • Coordinate daily accounting priorities, monitor deadlines, and support accountability across the accounting team.
  • Review accounting work for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
  • Research discrepancies, resolve issues, and bring recommendations to the Controller.

Own key parts of the financial close

  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
  • Help complete timely, accurate monthly and year-end closes.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, balance sheet accounts, and intercompany balances.
  • Assist with financial statements, management reporting, and outside accountant requests.

Maintain accurate construction accounting

  • Review job costs, cost coding, committed costs, and project financial activity.
  • Support preparation and review of work-in-progress schedules, including overbillings, underbillings, and project margin changes.
  • Work with project managers to investigate cost discrepancies and ensure accounting records reflect current project information.
  • Support progress billing, AIA billing, retainage tracking, collections, and accounts receivable reporting.
  • Help oversee subcontractor and vendor payments, lien releases, and required payment documentation.

Improve controls and processes

  • Maintain consistent accounting procedures and strengthen internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work, improve reporting, and prevent recurring errors.
  • Help the team use Sage Intacct and Procore effectively.
  • Support payroll-related accounting, cash reporting, and other financial projects as needed.

What We’re Looking For

  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful experience in construction accounting.
  • Experience as an Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or a comparable role with ownership of accounting functions.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP schedules, progress billing, retainage, and construction payment processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close responsibilities.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience working in accounting software.
  • Ability to review others’ work, explain corrections clearly, and help teammates improve.
  • Consistent employment history showing reliability, growth, and follow-through.
  • Strong organization, sound judgment, and the willingness to raise issues early.
  • Ability to work full-time, on-site in Fort Myers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and Procore.
  • Experience with a general contractor, multiple entities, or self-performed construction operations.
  • Previous responsibility for supervising or mentoring accounting staff.
  • CPA or CMA designation is a plus.

What Success Looks Like

  • Monthly closes are completed on time with accurate, well-supported balances.
  • Job cost and billing issues are identified and resolved promptly.
  • The accounting team has clear priorities and follows consistent processes.
  • The Controller can confidently delegate important responsibilities and rely on your follow-through.
  • Project managers and leadership receive financial information they can trust.

Why Benchmark?

You’ll work directly with our Controller and company leadership in a business where accurate financial information matters to daily decisions. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership, strengthen systems, develop the accounting team, and grow professionally as Benchmark grows.

We value people who tell the truth, raise problems early, plan ahead, hold a high standard, and treat coworkers, clients, and subcontractors with respect.

How to Apply

Submit your resume and a brief summary of your construction accounting experience. Please highlight your involvement with month-end close, WIP reporting, job costing, and any experience with Sage Intacct or Procore.
