About this role

About the Role

Integrated Circuit Solutions (ICS) is seeking a Senior/Lead Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership and advanced engineering expertise for medium-voltage power distribution, protection, and control systems. This role supports projects throughout the full lifecycle, from application development and equipment selection through design review, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical resource for complex applications, help develop safe, reliable, code-compliant, and cost-effective solutions, and provide mentorship and technical guidance to engineering personnel.

Areas of Technical Expertise

  • Medium-voltage metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear, circuit breakers, and load-break/disconnect switches
  • Transformers, motor control centers (MV MCCs), VFDs, and soft starters
  • Protection and control systems, protective relays, metering, and power monitoring
  • Automatic and manual transfer schemes, grounding systems, and capacitor banks/power factor correction
  • E-Houses, power distribution centers (PDCs), integrated power racks, and packaged electrical skids
  • PLC, SCADA, DCS, power management, and communication systems

Key Responsibilities

Product and Application Engineering

  • Lead development of medium-voltage power distribution solutions based on customer requirements, specifications, and project objectives.
  • Provide technical oversight for equipment selection, application, ratings, protection requirements, and system configurations.
  • Review and approve electrical drawings, technical documentation, equipment layouts, and engineering deliverables.
  • Evaluate complex applications, technical risks, and design alternatives to improve reliability, maintainability, safety, and cost.
  • Mentor engineering personnel and provide application guidance.

Technical Leadership and System Integration

  • Review system voltage, load requirements, available fault current, equipment ratings, grounding methods, and protection coordination.
  • Lead power system analyses, protection schemes, and equipment application reviews.
  • Develop electrical distribution architectures and integration strategies for medium-voltage systems.
  • Oversee integration of switchgear, transformers, MV MCCs, drives, protection systems, PLCs, SCADA, metering, and communications.
  • Support installation, startup, energization, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate technical requirements across electrical, controls, mechanical, structural, HVAC, manufacturing, and project engineering disciplines.

Protection, Control, and Automation

  • Develop medium-voltage protection and control philosophies and relay applications for feeder, transformer, motor, bus, and generator systems.
  • Review breaker control, interlocking, synchronization, transfer, permissive, and trip schemes.
  • Oversee DC control power, battery, UPS, and associated distribution systems.
  • Lead integration of protective relays, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and power management systems.
  • Review communication architectures and control narratives, sequence-of-operation documents, cause-and-effect matrices, and interlocking logic.

Codes, Standards, and Power System Studies

  • Apply and interpret NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL, and related industry standards.
  • Review equipment ratings, BIL levels, insulation systems, interrupting ratings, short-time withstand ratings, environmental requirements, and electrical clearances.
  • Lead or review short-circuit, protection coordination, load-flow, arc-flash, motor-starting, and voltage-drop studies.
  • Validate study assumptions and conclusions and recommend design changes as needed.
  • Identify and mitigate technical, application, and compliance risks.

Project, Manufacturing, and Customer Support

  • Provide technical leadership from proposal development through commissioning and field support.
  • Coordinate technical requirements with customers, consulting engineers, suppliers, utilities, and project stakeholders.
  • Support manufacturing and quality teams in resolving technical and production issues.
  • Lead design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FATs), customer inspections, relay testing, and system testing.
  • Investigate equipment failures, protection issues, non-conformances, and field events; lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Support proposals, equipment selection, scope definition, value engineering, supplier evaluations, and risk assessments.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and contribute to continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience with medium-voltage power distribution systems, including switchgear, substations, motor control, protection, or engineered electrical equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of medium-voltage power distribution, protection, and control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering activities involving one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, protection systems, and technical specifications.
  • Strong understanding of power system studies, protection coordination, grounding, transformer applications, equipment ratings, and electrical protection principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, instrument transformers, transformers, and associated control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL, and related standards.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, troubleshooting, and engineering decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and engineering resources.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with customers, suppliers, utilities, consultants, manufacturing personnel, and multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with medium-voltage power distribution systems from 2.4 kV through 38 kV.
  • Experience leading the design and application of medium-voltage switchgear, protection systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of protection, control, SCADA, communication systems, and power system studies.
  • Experience with E-Houses, PDCs, modular substations, integrated power skids, or similar engineered electrical systems.
  • Experience performing or reviewing short-circuit, coordination, load-flow, arc-flash, and motor-starting studies.
  • Proficiency with ETAP, SKM Power*Tools, EasyPower, or equivalent power system analysis software.
  • Experience leading factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning, troubleshooting, and field support.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, but not required.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means delivering safe, technically compliant, reliable, maintainable, and cost-effective medium-voltage electrical solutions. The engineer will help ensure appropriate equipment ratings and protection schemes, reduce engineering and manufacturing errors, identify technical risks early, resolve technical and field issues efficiently, support project schedules, and serve as a trusted technical authority.
