About this role
InnoVet Health is seeking an AI Solutions Engineer to serve as a technical advisor to the Veterans Health Administration's National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII) as it scales AI-assisted clinical search and summarization. You will help VA define requirements, weigh solution and hosting options, from VA's Azure Government and AWS GovCloud environments to FedRAMP-authorized commercial offerings, and guide deployment.
This role offers remote flexibility with occasional travel to VA sites, competitive benefits, and the opportunity to shape the technical foundation for responsible AI in federal healthcare.
Responsibilities
- Advise NAII, the Digital Health Office and clinical stakeholders, bringing an independent, vendor-neutral perspective and turning clinical and business needs into evidence-based recommendations for VA leadership.
- Support acquisition: facilitate requirements sessions, assess commercial offerings and build-versus-buy options, and recommend acceptance criteria.
- Assess how candidate solutions fit VA's hosting, security and architecture requirements, including the VA Technical Reference Model, security controls and existing ATO boundaries, and advise on each option's authorization path.
- Guide the architecture and configuration of selected solutions (e.g., LLM services, AI search, document intelligence/OCR), working alongside the scrum team, contributing hands-on where needed, and coordinating with the platform operations contractor's cloud administrators.
- Advise on integration with VA clinical data sources, including CPRS/VistA, the Federal EHR (Oracle Health), Health Information Exchange sources, faxed community records and FHIR-based APIs.
- Advise on Trustworthy AI practices (guardrails, grounding and source citation, output evaluation, AI documentation) and support ATO activities.
- Help evaluate initial deployments, defining performance and user-experience measures and shaping enterprise adoption recommendations.
QualificationsRequired
- Experience: 8+ years in cloud, software or systems engineering, including 3+ years designing solutions in Azure or AWS and 1+ years of hands-on work with LLMs or generative AI services.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or a related technical field. A Master's degree may substitute for some experience.
- Proven ability to advise technical and non-technical stakeholders and make clear, defensible recommendations to senior leaders.
- Hands-on experience with Azure AI services (e.g., Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search) or AWS equivalents, and solid cloud architecture fundamentals (networking, identity, infrastructure-as-code).
- Solid understanding of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), with enough Python to prototype and review technical work.
- Working knowledge of federal security requirements (e.g., NIST 800-53, FedRAMP), the ATO process, including authorization boundaries and control inheritance, and of protecting PHI under HIPAA.
- Able to obtain a High Risk (Tier 4) background investigation.
Preferred
- Experience in Azure Government or AWS GovCloud; relevant Azure or AWS AI or architecture certifications.
- Experience with clinical data and interoperability standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, C-CDA), including unstructured clinical text or scanned documents. VA experience (VistA, CPRS, CDW) is a strong plus.
- Federal IT acquisition experience and familiarity with the VA Trustworthy AI Framework.
