About this role

UX Designer & Strategist (Contract)

Remote (U.S.) |

Contract | ~12 Weeks

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We’re seeking a UX Designer & Strategist on a contract basis to lead the experience strategy and design for a critical, well-defined piece of a next-generation initiative.

This is a strategy- and research-forward role: we care most about UX thinking — the ability to structure a complex problem, map it clearly, and translate research into an actionable design direction — paired with the craft to execute the artifacts yourself with minimal supervision.

Specifically, you’ll own the UX strategy and design for how patients interact with the care pathway and EMR experiences during the post-booking phase of a next-generation provider-matching and booking experience.

You’ll define what a patient’s experience should be once they’ve been matched and booked, and how that experience connects into the systems and workflows that support ongoing care. You’ll partner with a lead researcher who will collaborate with you on the research plan, while you take primary ownership of producing the design and strategy artifacts.

You’ll join for a focused ~12-week engagement on a full-time basis, with an opportunity to convert to a permanent full-time role for the right person.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON·

Develop the UX strategy for the patient’s post-booking experience, defining how patients interact with care pathway and EMR experiences after they have been matched and booked.·

Partner with the lead researcher to shape a research plan, and translate research findings into clear strategic direction and design decisions.·

Create and own core UX artifacts: user journey maps, user flows, and process maps that make a complex, multi-system experience legible to stakeholders.· Execute wireframes and design artifacts independently, with minimal supervision and feedback.· Use AI tools to accelerate research synthesis, artifact production, and iteration.· Map how the booking experience hands off into the EHR, identifying friction points, edge cases, and opportunities across the patient journey.·

Present strategy and artifacts clearly to product, engineering, clinical, and research stakeholders, and iterate based on their input.· Ensure your design direction is grounded in usability, accessibility, and the realities of a regulated healthcare environment.

QUALIFICATIONS·

5+ years of UX design experience with a strong strategy and research orientation, and a portfolio demonstrating that range. A portfolio is required for consideration.· Demonstrated ability to develop UX strategy for complex, multi-step, multi-system experiences.·

A genuine research background — comfortable partnering on a research plan and turning findings into design decisions.·

Proven skill creating user journey maps, user flows, and process maps for sophisticated problems.· Ability to execute wireframes and design artifacts independently, with minimal supervision.· Fluency with AI tools for accelerating research synthesis, artifact creation, and design iteration.·

Expert-level proficiency in Figma (and comfort with mapping/diagramming tools such as FigJam, Miro, or similar).·

Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, and the ability to work self-directed at a full-time pace in a remote setting.· Experience designing care pathway and/or EMR / electronic medical record user experiences; experience with specific platforms such as AthenaHealth is helpful but not required.·

Experience in healthcare, mental/behavioral health, telehealth, or other regulated domains.· Experience designing scheduling, booking, matching, or intake/onboarding flows.·

Familiarity with service design and mapping experiences that span multiple products or systems.

PORTFOLIO EXPECTATIONS

Please include a portfolio or work samples with your application.

We’re specifically looking for evidence of:· Journey maps, user flows, and/or process maps for complex, multi-step experiences.· UX strategy work that shows how you framed a problem and drove to a direction.·

Wireframes or design artifacts you executed yourself.

Case studies that walk through your thinking (problem → research → strategy → artifacts → outcome) are strongly encouraged.

ENGAGEMENT DETAILS·

Structure: Independent contractor / freelance engagement, with contract-to-hire potential.· Commitment: Full-time or near-full-time hours for the duration.· Timeline: Approximately 12 weeks, starting ASAP.· Location: Fully remote within the United States; must be available to collaborate during core U.S. business hours.· Level: Mid- to Senior.· Team: Digital Product / UX.· Conversion: Strong potential to transition into a permanent, full-time role based on fit and business need.

Pay: $55.00 - $60.00 per hour
