About this role
Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior and Mid-Level Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Software Engineers to design, build, and maintain major components of the software platforms that control our automated electronic test and support systems. This role owns delivery of significant subsystems within the GSE software platform, serving both engineering development and production test environments.
The ideal candidate brings solid experience in modern Python software engineering, asynchronous systems programming, and hardware communications. You will take ownership of well-defined subsystems end to end — proposing designs, implementing them, and standing behind their quality — while working within the platform architecture and technical direction set by the Principal GSE Software Engineer.
You will collaborate with the Lead Test Systems Engineer, the Principal GSE Software Engineer, Integration & Test engineers, and the Engineering Systems Integration Engineer, contributing your perspective to design discussions and helping less experienced engineers grow.
Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency with Python asyncio and concurrent/asynchronous programming paradigms.
- Hands-on experience communicating with laboratory test equipment and hardware devices (e.g., instruments, controllers, embedded systems), including VISA and SCPI.
- Solid grounding in object-oriented design and software design principles for non-trivial systems.
- Demonstrated ability to debug, stabilize, and optimize software that interacts with physical hardware.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines including software, test, systems, electrical, and manufacturing engineering.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- U.S. Person status as defined by ITAR, 22 CFR 120.62 (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual).
- 3–9 years of professional experience developing software in Python.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automated electronic test systems and Ground Support Equipment (GSE) in aerospace, defense, or complex electronics environments.
- Hands-on experience with PyVISA, serial interfaces, CAN, TCP/IP, and other common instrument/control protocols.
- Background in manufacturing or production test environments, particularly those involving high-reliability or safety-critical systems.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Technology, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
- Experience developing reusable software components or libraries adopted by more than one team or project.
- Experience designing for long-term maintainability, scalability, and reuse within engineering and production organizations.
- Experience mentoring or onboarding less experienced engineers.
Success in this role is measured by:
- Quality, reliability, and maintainability of the subsystems you own
- Independent delivery of scoped work with minimal oversight
- Reliability of production test operations you support
- Effective reuse of the components you build across projects and programs
- Growth of the engineers you mentor and the quality of reviews you give
Duties & Responsibilities:
Software Design & Development
- Design and implement subsystems of the GSE software platform, consistent with established standards, design principles, and best practices.
- Write and review asynchronous Python code for concurrent control of instruments and support equipment.
- Develop reusable Python components and libraries that underpin automated GSE and test systems.
- Define clear interfaces and abstractions for the instruments, communication buses, and test procedures within your scope.
- Evaluate tools and libraries relevant to your work and recommend options with supporting tradeoff analysis.
Framework & Platform Development
- Build and own reusable instrument drivers and communication abstractions applied across diverse projects and test systems.
- Implement and extend execution framework capabilities covering sequencing, scheduling, concurrency, error handling, logging, and health monitoring.
- Develop measurement acquisition, data processing, and results management software integrated with enterprise engineering tools and data systems.
- Implement configuration, deployment, and monitoring mechanisms for GSE software in both laboratory and production environments.
System Integration & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Integration & Test engineers to translate I&T requirements into reliable, maintainable automated test procedures on the GSE platform.
- Coordinate with the Engineering Systems Integration Engineer to integrate GSE software with enterprise systems (e.g., engineering databases, PLM, configuration management, data repositories).
- Contribute to framework design discussions led by the Principal GSE Software Engineer and the Lead Test Systems Engineer.
- Support production test operations by diagnosing system issues, improving performance, and increasing reliability.
Engineering Practices & Mentorship
- Practice and uphold professional software engineering disciplines including code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, and configuration management.
- Mentor junior software and test engineers in asynchronous programming, software design, and automated test and GSE practices.
- Serve as an active reviewer on peers' changes, raising design and maintainability concerns constructively.
- Perform root-cause analysis on GSE software issues within your area and implement durable corrective actions.
What Makes This Role Distinct?
This is not a QA automation or web application role. The Senior/Mid-Level GSE Software Engineer:
- Owns design and delivery of significant subsystems within the reusable software platform that powers automated electronic test systems and Ground Support Equipment.
- Proposes and documents designs for those subsystems, working within the overall platform architecture rather than defining it.
- Operates at the intersection of software engineering, hardware control, and systems integration, on software that directly drives mission-critical test and support equipment.
In this role, you will hold real technical ownership over meaningful pieces of long-lived engineering infrastructure, with room to grow toward broader platform and architectural responsibility.
