Job description

About this role

Fairmount Technologies (FT) is a growing advanced manufacturing company developing tooling-free CNC systems for aerospace and defense applications. Our mission is to integrate real-time automation directly onto the factory floor, ensuring unprecedented precision, safety, and efficiency in aerospace component production.

Recent milestone

FT was selected for a U.S. Department of Defense APFIT award, supporting deployment of our systems across multiple Air Force maintenance depots. As we scale production and system capability, we’re expanding our software team.

We are seeking a versatile Senior Software Engineer to bridge the gap between robust industrial hardware and advanced artificial intelligence.

Position Overview

In this role, you will build and modernize Human-Machine Interface (HMI) desktop applications that control and monitor complex CNC machining systems. You will use C# to drive high-performance, real-time desktop UIs and Python to deploy predictive machine learning models at the edge. This role is critical to transforming raw machine telemetry into actionable, intelligent automation on the shop floor.

Core Responsibilities

  • Next-Gen HMI Development: Design, scale, and optimize high-performance desktop interfaces that connect operator control systems directly with CNC machinery.
  • UI Modernization: Maintain and enhance legacy WinForms developed on WPF applications, while actively pioneering migrations to modern, fluent architectures like WPF or WinUI and cross-platform ecosystems like Avalonia.
  • Edge Machine Learning Integration: Deploy, test, train, and optimize PyTorch and TensorFlow models inside production environments to handle anomalies, predict tool wear, and automate vision-based quality control in addition to predicting part deviations.
  • Hybrid Data Architecture: Build and manage data layers that combine structured configuration/part logs with scalable NoSQL (MongoDB) for high-frequency time-series sensor data.
  • Hardware-Software Synthesis: Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and automation engineers to ingest CNC controller data seamlessly into your application workflows.

Technical Requirements

Desktop & HMI Frameworks (C#)

  • Advanced WPF : Deep expertise in Windows desktop environments, including MVVM architecture, multithreading, custom control rendering, and memory management.
  • WinUI & Avalonia: Hands-on experience or strong working knowledge of building fluid Windows 11 apps and cross-platform desktop interfaces (Windows/ UI deployment).

Machine Learning & Intelligence (Python)

  • PyTorch & TensorFlow: Practical experience deploying and inferencing machine and deep learning models in real-world environments.
  • Python Engineering: Mastery of Python for analytics pipelines, sensor data preprocessing, and scripting to communicate with C# backends.

Databases & Telemetry

  • SQL: Strong proficiency in relational database schema design, indexing, and complex queries (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • MongoDB: Solid understanding of NoSQL concepts for managing semi-structured telemetry, time-series data, and machine logs.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a heavy emphasis on desktop engineering and heavy data/AI application integration.
  • Domain Knowledge: Previous experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES), CNC controllers (Beckhoff preferred or similar systems like Fanuc, Siemens), or aviation/aerospace safety standards is a massive plus.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Mindset: A strict commitment to software reliability, code safety, and high-precision execution required for manufacturing environments.

Regulatory & Location Requirements

  • Export Control Compliance: This position requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled technologies. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) and eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws.
  • Location: Relocation to the Wichita / Derby, KS area is required. This role involves working closely with physical CNC hardware and aerospace manufacturing environments on the shop floor.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience and scope of role
  • (Typical range: $80,000–$140,000+)
  • Flexible working hours to support your optimal work-life schedule.
  • PTO to ensure dynamic work-life balance.
  • Optional Health, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Profit sharing, so you benefit directly from the company’s success
  • Direct access to leadership and technical decision-making
  • A chance to grow with the company as our manufacturing footprint scales
