What You’ll Be Doing

  • Position Summary The Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains features in the web user experience for the Evolent Platform.
  • Working in an Agile, globally distributed team, this role builds React and Next.js (TypeScript) features and partners with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver clean, accessible, and reliable code.
  • This individual works with minimal supervision on assigned features, actively learning and adopting the development methods, frameworks, and patterns defined for the role and by the team, and contributes to the design and implementation of enhancements to the team’s systems.
  • The role is expected to use approved AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery and improve quality while remaining fully accountable for every result delivered.
  • AI-Assisted Engineering Expectations Evolent engineers are expected to effectively leverage approved AI-assisted development and productivity tools (e.g., code assistants, copilots, automation agents, knowledge assistants, and analytics tools) to improve quality, efficiency, and innovation while maintaining accountability for all delivered work.
  • These expectations span the full engineering lifecycle, not only code generation, including iterating with AI on solution design, evaluating alternatives, and producing design artifacts.
  • Engineers remain responsible for validating outputs, ensuring solution quality, protecting sensitive information, and complying with security, privacy, regulatory, and Responsible AI standards.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain React and Next.js features for assigned areas of the application, following the team’s established patterns and coding standards.
  • Build Server and Client Components, forms, and data-heavy screens, such as grids and document viewers, using the team’s component library.
  • Integrate features with backend-for-frontend endpoints and platform APIs.
  • Write component and end-to-end tests using Vitest, React Testing Library, and Playwright.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of enhancements to the team’s systems.

Quality and Continuous Improvement

  • Build accessible components that meet WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA and Section 508, and fix accessibility defects.
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality, functionality, and maintainability, and seek feedback to continuously improve skills.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical issues and bugs in a timely manner.
  • Follow and help reinforce the team’s development processes and standards, helping peers understand the benefits and risks of exceptions.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes and tools and stay current with emerging front-end and agentic UI technologies.

AI-Enabled Delivery

  • Utilize approved AI-assisted engineering tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to accelerate software development, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate and validate AI-generated outputs for correctness, security, maintainability, compliance, and business appropriateness before use.
  • Learn and adopt the prompts, skills, agents, and AI-assisted development patterns defined by the team and share improvements that benefit the team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity and quality through AI-enabled workflows and automation.

Governance and Compliance

  • Follow enterprise policies governing AI usage, intellectual property protection, security, privacy, PHI handling, and Responsible AI practices.
  • Handle patient data safely under HIPAA, following the team’s standards for keeping PHI out of browser storage, logs, and telemetry.
  • Ensure no confidential, regulated, or protected information is used with unapproved AI services or tooling.
  • Participate in peer reviews and validation processes for AI-assisted solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional software development experience building web applications with React and TypeScript.
  • Working knowledge of Next.js or another server rendered React framework.
  • Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern React patterns, such as hooks, state management, and component composition.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and asynchronous data fetching, including streaming responses.
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility (WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA) and semantic HTML.
  • Familiarity with Vitest or Jest, React Testing Library, and Playwright.
  • Familiarity with Git-based version control (e.g., GitHub) and pull requests, and CI/CD using GitHub Actions.
  • Regular use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a globally distributed team.
  • Strong communication skills, openness to feedback, and the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with enterprise component libraries such as KendoReact (Telerik) or MUI.
  • Familiarity with Entra ID (Azure AD) and OpenID Connect.
  • Familiarity with Python or C# and .NET.
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with FHIR R4.
  • Healthcare domain experience.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
