Job description

About this role

Dynamic 3D is in a stage of rapid growth. As such, we are seeking a Product Design Engineer who exists at the intersection of aesthetic brilliance and mechanical reality to help bolster our ranks and drive innovation and creativity.

The products we design have major impacts in a wide variety of industries, and as such, a high level of understanding and comprehension in both the design and manufacturing spaces are extremely important to us.

This is not an introductory role, and it requires thorough experience with the tools provided by SolidWorks and a good understanding of what it takes to bring an idea from concept into reality at each step of the process, from initial models all the way through to final manufacturing.

Because we work with scan data for most of our clients, having experience working with scan data and scan-to-CAD workflows is a big step in the right direction for any potential applicants.

As a member of the Product Design team, you will be a primary architect of form and function, translating high-level concepts and loose requests into manufacturable, performant 3D models with clear tolerances, well-documented engineering drawings, and thorough attention to detail. We handle a very wide variety of projects, from aerospace and medical to jewelery and home goods.

You will need a solid understanding of not just how to 3D model, but also of how to structure complex assemblies and create engineering drawings that strictly adhere to GD&T rules. If you view SolidWorks as an extension of yourself, you view roadblocks as challenges to overcome, and you believe that "good enough" is the enemy of innovation, you belong here.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Ownership: When assigned a project, you will drive the end-to-end design process for complex products, from scan data and/or initial industrial design sketches to final engineering release. This means you are responsible for determining design intent and asking the client the right questions to get each project off to a healthy start!
  • CAD Mastery: Execute expert-level 3D modeling, focusing on high-complexity Scan-to-CAD workflows, Class-A surfacing, parametric master modeling, and advanced, configurable assemblies. We have modeled parts that had to conform to scan data within 0.005” or less. This requires extreme dedication, attention to detail, and the willingness to try, try again until you get it right.
  • Bridge Design & Engineering: GD&T understanding and the ability to create clear, well-defined engineering drawings is critical to delivering products and packages that meet our clients’ expectations. Leverage your skills and experience to ensure that aesthetic intent is never sacrificed for mechanical necessity (and vice versa).
  • Project Orchestration: Manage workflows and design sprints, ensuring all milestones are met with technical precision and creative integrity. Call out blockers early to prevent client disappointment. Coordinate with other engineers to utilize everyone's experience where it's best suited.
  • Design for Excellence (DfX): Direct the integration of manufacturing constraints into the design phase to minimize downstream revisions. Think ahead and be proactive; don't release something you know won't work. Mistakes are allowed as that makes us human, but negligence is a choice and will not be tolerated.

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is all that is required, but degreed applicants are equally welcome.
  • CAD Expertise (Required): 3–7 years of professional experience creating complex 3D models and accompanying engineering drawings using SolidWorks. We are looking for power users who understand expressions, synchronous modeling, and complex surfacing modules, and scan-to-CAD workflows.
  • Product Pedigree: A proven portfolio of shipped products that demonstrate a sophisticated visual language and robust mechanical understanding.

Preferred "Bonus" Skills

  • 3D Scanning & Metrology: Proficiency in utilizing 3D scan data for reverse engineering, inspection, or digital surfacing workflows. Experience specifically with Creaform.OS, VXElements, Peel.OS, and/or Geomagic Design X.
  • FEA & Simulation: Experience performing Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and other mechanical simulations to validate designs early on from within SolidWorks.
  • Workflow Management: Experience using Dropbox and monday.com or a similar system to track project timelines and worked hours, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and manage design assets.
  • 3D Printing: We on occasion print prototypes for some clients, and in those cases, it’s always helpful to have another person who knows how to operate Bambu Labs 3D printers.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Solution-Oriented: We need someone who is solution oriented; every day presents a new, unique, and complex challenge for us to solve. This does not work without having a team of people who are all equally driven and focused on finding solutions, not just on calling out problems.
  • Consistent: Steady and consistent growth will always be the goal with us; we do not want two steps forward one step back if we can have a steady one step forward every single day.
  • Self-Teaching: As a rapidly growing company, there are days when it can be difficult to find someone to provide guidance. It’s important to be able to find solutions and grow your knowledgebase when you find the opportunity, even when others aren’t available to help guide you.
  • Thirsty for Knowledge: We want people who want to be here because they’re passionate about what we do. We solve problems for some of the biggest companies in the world, and that’s only possible with a team that’s always striving to be the best at what they do.
  • Keen on Travel: If you don’t like to travel, this job is probably not for you; We are extremely customer-centric, which means if a customer has an emergency and we need to be on a flight in the morning to support them, we get on the flight.
  • Can Think Outside of the Box: Sometimes, the “traditional” solution won’t do the trick; in those cases, get creative! We need people who can think on the fly and come up with solutions when presented with an unexpected problem.
  • Precision-Obsessed: You notice a 0.5mm deviation in a parting line from across the room, and it bothers you. Why have the best scanning technology on the market and not utilize it to its fullest potential? To do so requires having an eye for detail though.
  • Agile and Flexible Mindset: You thrive in an environment where "the way we’ve always done it" is a prompt for improvement rather than a rule.
  • Effective Communicator: You can explain complex surfacing logic to a non-technical stakeholder without losing them in the weeds.
  • Problem Solver: You don't just identify "it won't work"; you arrive with three "how it could work" alternatives.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
