About this role
Apple is where individual imaginations gather together, committing to the values that lead to great work. Every new product we build, service we create, or Apple Store experience we deliver is the result of us making each other’s ideas stronger. That happens because every one of us shares a belief that we can make something wonderful and share it with the world, changing lives for the better.
It’s the diversity of our people and their thinking that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do. When we bring everybody in, we can do the best work of our lives. Here, you’ll do more than join something — you’ll add something.
The Applied Research and Characterization team combines expertise in mechanical engineering, human factors, biomechanics, data analysis, statistics, software, and prototyping. We deliver data-backed insights for design decisions across Apple's entire hardware portfolio, directly influencing products launched worldwide.
You'll have access to cutting-edge equipment and collaborate with multidisciplinary experts across our global sites. Few teams offer this breadth of impact combined with world-class resources.
As a human factors engineer, you’ll design user studies, engage with participants, and analyze data to find insights. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with instrumented prototypes to quantify human behavior and develop tools to streamline data processing. We’re looking for a highly collaborative individual who’s motivated to learn and contribute to solving complex problems.
BS in Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar technical field. In lieu of this, 5 years of relevant work experience is desired. Experience with human studies — UX, psychology research, or similar.
Experience with data analysis — could include significance testing, correlations, cleaning raw signals, or similar. Strong interpersonal skills — can actively listen to feedback, ask thoughtful questions, and empathetically interact with users. Good written and verbal communication — able to create clear slides with results and share compelling arguments.
Familiarity with measurements and data collection using sensors (load cell, pressure, acceleration, stretch sensors, and similar). Experience using motion capture (Vicon, Optitrack, Motion Analysis). Experience building and automating data pipelines (Matlab, Python, R, or similar).
Design experience with CAD tools (NX, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc.). Capable of troubleshooting prototype device software and custom hardware for data collection.
